Here’s a shocker: the average person takes in 22 teaspoons of sugar daily—more than three times the amount suggested by the American Heart Association. And although it has never been considered a health food, new evidence shows sugar can do even more damage than previously thought, setting you up for obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. But weaning yourself off sugar can be daunting. It’s tough to dodge because it hides in so many foods, and it provides an almost addictive buzz, thanks to a surge of the neurotransmitter dopamine after it enters the body, says research neuroscientist Nicole Avena, PhD, author of “Why Diets Fail (Because You’re Addicted to Sugar)” ($19; amazon.com). Still, slashing sugar is one food trend worth trying.
Why do some doctors and scientists think that diets are doomed to fail. Science thinks that we are addicted to sugar and until we get the sugar out of our system and free ourselves of this addiction, we’ll never be able to successfully lose weight and keep it off. I understand the point they are making. But I think our addictions go far beyond sugar. Some think that you can be addicted to processed or enriched white flour and the addiction to white flour is just as bad as sugar. Others say you can be addicted to the animal fats or saturated fats and large amounts of sodium that are used in processed foods. And some say that any food man-made is the problem.
I’m in the camp that believes man-made food is causing our weight problem and I’ll explain.
If you ate healthy, nutritious food, fresh food and never ate anything else, and had a normal amount of activity you’d never gain weight. When you gain weight in your adult years you’re adding fat to your body and why are you adding fat? Because you’re eating foods that your body can’t use and you’re eating too much of it. When your body is consuming more food or drink that it can process in the liver, than the excess will be turned into fat and stored. So what is excess? You might not think that you consume too much food and maybe you don’t, but the excess means excess of processed foods. There is always a small amount of non-essential or bad foods that the body can process and dispose of. But when we eat non-essential food or foods with little or no nutritional value your body will have to store most of it in fat cells.
In order to stay healthy you want to get rid of as much excess fat as possible. So how do you know what’s excess? You are in luck, the body stores the unwanted fat between your knees and your waist. The belly fat is the worst fat and you want to lose that, but the thighs and butt are other areas the body will store excess fat. There is a limit to how much belly fat you can hold, so the next area is generally the butt.
All of this excess fat is caused from food addiction and it starts with sugar or salt. By giving up processed or manufactured food you can eliminate much of that salt and sugar. And during this detox you want to only order plain salads when eating out. You can season the salad by squeezing lemon juice on the salad. You’re not going to like your food very much, but you’ll feel much better after a few weeks. Buy only fresh produce and fresh meat. Try and eat as much seafood and poultry as possible. Trim off all the animal fat that you can find. Be careful buying and meat or poultry, some meat is marinated with tenderizers that are very high in sodium. That’s very bad for your blood pressure. You can use spices to season your food and even use cinnamon in coffee and tea, but don’t use sugar.
