If you have read my posts over the past year, you probably have read some of my posts about this vary thing. We all try for quick results and that the mistake we make. Our body has built in mechanisms to protect the body and the one we are fighting is the mechanism to prevent us from starving.
This was the number one problem for “ancient man”. It was hard to find food and so the body has these defensive mechanisms to prevent us from starving. So why doesn’t the body prevent us from gaining too much fat? Good question and the way I see it, there’s two answers. The first is that we are tricking our bodies by gaining weight over a long period of time. You might not think it your weight gain over a long period, but if the body has had time to adjust, then that’s a long enough period of time.
The most important thing you have to learn is how to lose weight slowly. Not just the physical components of eating and exercising, but the psychological aspects as well. If your body thinks that your losing too much weight too fast, it sends out an extra supply of hormones to stimulate your appetite. Generally, this almost forces you to binge eat those foods you stopped eating.
Many of us want to see instant changes on the scale but, slow weight loss means weeks or months before seeing significant changes. Learning to lose weight slowly means:
Forgetting about weight loss – It sounds counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to lose weight is to forget about losing weight. Instead of asking, “How much weight did I lose this week?” it’s about asking, “How much exercise did I get this week? Was I careful with my diet most of the time?” If you’re able to do that, the weight loss will happen.
Learning to Enjoy Healthy Eating and Exercise
To many of us, the words ‘healthy eating’ and ‘exercise’ do not inspire any sort of enjoyment. However, as you practice both of these skills, you start to feel good, which goes a long way towards motivating you to keep going. Remember the benefits of what you’re doing and that weight loss is only one of them. As you learn to exercise on a regular basis you’ll start to enjoy it and want to exercise every day and if you miss a day, you’ll notice that you don’t have the energy you should have.
Exercising, if you’re doing it right, will create more energy and you’ll feel that after a workout, that’s your body burning more calories. Having that extra energy will last you throughout the day. You will have to exercise regularly (5 times a week) to maintain that weight loss.
So the secret in losing weight is to lose it slowly and maintain the weight loss by exercising. Change what you eat. Change to real, fresh foods. Cut out dairy until you lose those pounds and don’t drink calories and find an exercise plan you can keep doing year around. Walking is the best, outside is best but mall walking is good. Learn to walk to lose weight. Strolling along will not burn enough calories.
