The top on my list would be to eat less. You can accomplish this by first eating slower and second eat for only 20 minutes then stop. Eating for only 20 minutes is a good practice, often we are in the habit of grazing and that packs on the pounds.
Sleeping more can keep you from grazing and will reduce your total calorie intake for the day. And you do burn calories when you sleep. You can lose from 12 to 20 pounds extra a year by sleeping one hour extra a day.
Cook more. By cooking 3 vegetables for dinner instead of one, you’ll eat more veggies a day without trying. You don’t have to eat everything you cook. Veggies reheat better than other foods, so make 3 vegetables one day and they’ll last for 2 or 3 days. Eating more fruits and veggies is a great way to lose weight. Remember to cook without fat and season with lemon and herbs rather than creams or sauces.
Soup is another way to lose weight. Make a meal with a vegetable soup, minestrone, tortilla soup or Chinese won-ton. Start with a low-sodium broth, add fresh or frozen vegetables and simmer. Beware of creamed soups which can be high in fat and calories. With the soup you can have a toasted cheese sandwich on whole-grain bread.
Whole grains like brown rice, oats or whole wheat also belong in your weight lose diet. Whole grains will help fill you up and can lower your cholesterol. You can find whole grains in many products like pasta, english muffins, pizza crust and soft breads like wheat and white.
I’ve started to read labels again and I’ve found that things are changing and for the better.
By skipping Bacon in the morning you can save 100 calories a day or 12 to 15 pounds a year and you can easily substitute with tomato slices, banana peppers, or brown mustard. This is also a way to lower your cholesterol.
Cut back on sugar is another way to lose weight without dieting. The best way is to cut out sweet drinks, hot or cold. I drink zero-calorie seltzer and add lemon, mint or a frozen strawberry. What’s bad about the sweet drinks is that they won’t make you full. When you eat sugary foods like donuts, you will fill up and then stop eating but with sugary drinks you never fill-up and you actually become thirsty quicker so you drink more. Most people counting calories will forget about the drinks or just add a few calories when they calculate calories in a meal, but actually two 12 ounce drinks can be more calories then the food you eat. Often in the summer we can consume 2000 to 3000 calories a day just in drinks. If your watching your weight your total calorie intake should be below 2000 calories a day food,snacks and drinks combined.
If you drink alcohol, remember to limit the ounces of alcohol. If you can eliminate beer and wine that would be best. Both are high in sugar. Clear alcohol per ounce has the lowest calorie count. Tequila would be my choice for the best alcohol. Alcohol also can increase your craving for snacks.
Drinking green tea is also good for weight lose. Tea itself is a much healthier drink, hot or cold but it’s green tea that is said to help you lose weight.
A Consumer’s Report Survey found that eating meals at home five days a week will help you lose weight. Cooking can be easier than you think. We use a slow-cooker at our house but many people I know buy pre-washed salad mix, pre-cut frozen vegetables and fresh meat at the meat counter of your grocery. Fresh meat will keep for 3 days without freezing. When buying fresh meat always “how old is it”?
Chew gum with a strong mint or cinnamon flavor after your meal or when you don’t want to eat and it will overpower the taste for other foods.
